As taken earlier today by the Mars Insight probe. This probe was built by people just like you and I.

Counterpoint: it was not build by people like me because I can barely do simple math, let alone launch a rocket and probe to another planet.

BULLSHIT. The people just like me built this:

Counterpoint: I play KSP so I’m even smarter than they are.

haha I was thinking the same thing. those people are rocket scientists . they fall into a whole other group that also includes people like brain surgeons . You definitely dont want me doing brain sur ger y on you.

Yeah, but how long before the LS swap loses an oil pan on those rocks?
You and I just couldn’t agree on ground clearance.

yep - Aerojet Rocketdyne is just down the street. We used to be able to hear their test firings. Comin’ in hot on a supersonic parachute? You need Aerojet Rocketdyne retro thrusters to make your landing smooth.

Well, it’s not exactly brain surgery, is it?

Counter-counter point: NASA really likes farm kids. And tinkerers. Because the math is a part (an important part), but the engineering requires people who know how to make things work and play nice and do things they were never designed to do.
The math is complex, but they approach it differently than the seventeen chalkboard equation you saw in Hidden Figures now that computers are more robust. If you start to include time as a parameter, the math gets easier (as the changes and reactions of the system can be modeled across time
). It’s actually easier nowadays for people with practical knowledge than it is for the math geeks.

The stuff I did for NASA was the highlight of my career
. If you get a chance to do stuff for/with
NASA, do it. Just an awesome atmosphere and great people.

Who do you think is running the camera?

We’re only going to Mars now because that’s where the Nazis went after they finished building their secret research facility on the Moon .
Duh.

The photo resolution is impressive, as is the fact that they were able to beam it from there to here.

The stuff I did for NASA involved giving a training to people in West Virginia. It was not the highlight of my career. I did work with a project manager who came from JSC, and he was a good guy.

Hate to say it but people like you and me would just make very pretty but very expensive explosions. This is somewhat better...

Thankfully y
ou do learn a lot doing boring stuff - I learned a lot of what I needed for that work doing hideously boring stuff.

I worked with folks from JPL and Ames for the most part. The people I found most painful and useless were on the east coast, so this checks out. Although the younger folks on the east coast were awesome - I think the good ones
on the east coast
tend to move on to the defense companies because of the salary difference, and the lousy ones make a career of it
.

That was a fun movie and they seriously thought through a good 25% of the logistics, but the bottom line is that he would have been radiated beyond a crisp. And they wouldn’t have had

My daughter once said to me, “Daddy, never judge a book by its movie.”
I’m sure the book is better. I thought the movie was pretty decent in its own right. But I am still pretty sure that in 400-500 days of running around in a suit designed for a week’s use, our hero would literally be toast.
